Dealing with serious accidents is undoubtedly a painful and unpleasant issue to deal with.

Many prefer not to even think about it or prepare for the day they will have to deal with it, but unfortunately, the construction industry provides us with a serious accident almost every day, such as:

  • A worker who fell from a height to his death

  • A wall collapsed on workers at a construction site.

  • An excavation that collapsed on the workers working inside it

  • A crane that collapsed and caused bodily injury and property damage

  • And many more examples

In fact, every year about 6,000 workers are injured, of which about 50 are killed. On average, almost 20 people are injured every day. That's a lot, that's not normal, and that's the reality. That's also why we chose to post content on the subject and provide you with the most important instructions regarding the steps you should take when dealing with serious accidents.

Description of What Happens at the Event Scene in Case of a Serious Accident

It's unexpected, it happens in one second, and then the construction site becomes an event scene full of panic, confusion, chaos, and shock. Alongside these spontaneous reactions, the event begins to penetrate everyone's consciousness and then everything becomes even more messed up.

Within minutes, beyond the rescue forces, medical teams, and police dealing with the accident and its victims (including the presence of television crews documenting the event), the construction site becomes a scene where just moments before everyone worked in harmony according to a work plan and clear procedures, and suddenly each person for themselves, acting from interests contradictory to others out of fear that blame or criminal responsibility might fall on them.

And then they arrive. Labor Ministry inspectors, police investigators, insurance company investigators, private adjusters, joined by lawyers (yes... unbelievable how quickly they arrive) and other stakeholders in relation to the event. Some come to find guilty parties, some to investigate the causes of the accident, some to try to assess damages, some to "hunt" for clients.

Recommendations for General Guidelines for Dealing with Serious Accidents:

Performing the following actions will benefit you in subsequent handling of the event, determining responsibility, and examining the behavior of the responsible party in the field. Therefore, we will be very concise and sharp in our messages.

Immediately upon occurrence of an accident, you must act quickly as follows:

  • You must call rescue forces to treat the injured.

  • You must ensure isolation of the event scene.

  • You must document what happened and the scene with voice and video recording.

  • You must write down the names and details of those involved and witnesses.

  • You must prepare relevant documents for the matter (notification of construction work performance, constructor approval, scaffolding approval, authorized inspector report, etc.).

  • There is an absolute prohibition on changing the event scene.

  • You must cooperate with police investigators and Labor Ministry investigators.

  • It is forbidden to talk with insurance investigators without written approval and power of attorney from your insurance company.

  • In most cases (except for exceptions), only the authorized work manager will speak with anyone who comes to the site regarding the accident.
