Construction 4.0 - This is how the construction site is managed today

By: Assaf Gutter, Beti

Beti aims to transform construction site operations through a dedicated technology system for project management tailored to the industry. The system supports a project from groundbreaking to the handover of apartments to residents, with a special focus on safety and quality management.

Awareness of workplace safety on construction sites has increased significantly over the past two years. Workplace accidents occur on a weekly basis, and reports of injuries and fatalities on construction sites have, unfortunately, become routine. In light of this troubling situation, the government is implementing measures to strengthen regulation and enforcement on-site. The understanding is that improving safety conditions at work must start with the management aspect. To address this, Beti was established to change construction site management through dedicated site management technology.

Beti was founded by entrepreneurs Adv. Omer Slavin and Shir Mautner. Adv. Slavin, the company CEO, is a fourth-generation member of an Israeli contractor family, giving him deep exposure to the construction world from an early age. COO Mautner previously served as COO of a company organizing mega-events in Israel and abroad, and together with Slavin, managed residential construction projects in Poland and Israel.

The company was founded on the basis of the long-standing partnership between the two, which began during their military service as officers and combatants in Sayeret Matkal. Along the way, they brought in their Sayeret colleagues Dekel Schwartzman—who has seven years of experience in software development, algorithm design, and systems engineering—and Assaf Gutter—with eight years of experience in business development and sales at a global company in South Africa. Together, they established a company based on values of excellence, creative thinking, efficiency, continuous improvement, and belief in the mission.

The field of safety at work on construction sites has become significantly more prominent in the last two years. Work accidents occur on a weekly basis and reports of injuries and fatalities on construction sites have, unfortunately, become a matter of habit. In light of this dismal situation, the state is leading steps to increase regulation and enforcement on sites in the field. The understanding is that a change in the safety situation at work must first begin with the managerial aspect. To this end, Beti was founded, with the goal of changing the conduct on the construction site with the help of dedicated site management technology.

Beti was founded by entrepreneurs Adv. Omer Slavin and Shir Mautner. Adv. Slavin, the company's CEO, is the fourth generation of a family of Israeli contractors, so he absorbed the world of construction while still at home. VP of Operations Mautner previously served as VP of Operations at a company that organizes mega events in Israel and abroad, and together with Slavin, managed residential construction projects in Poland and Israel. The company was founded on the basis of the two's long-standing friendship, which began during their military service as officers and soldiers in Sayeret Matkal. They were joined along the way by their friends from Sayeret Dekel Schwartzman - who has seven years of experience in software development, algorithmics and systems engineering, and Assaf Gutter - who has eight years of experience in business development and sales at a global company from South Africa. Together, they founded a company based on the values of excellence, creative thinking, efficiency, the pursuit of constant improvement, and faith in the path.

Beti Holistic Construction Site Management Solution

"Beti was born from the ground up, to create a holistic solution for managing construction sites while maintaining a high standard of performance, managing safety in the work environment, and meeting project schedules and budgets. This is based on our familiarity with the needs on the ground and a desire to influence how things are conducted there," says Slavin. "We set ourselves the goal of both organizing and streamlining the ongoing work processes on the site and improving safety processes with the help of technological tools. We realized that providing broader control and oversight to the project manager reduces the distance between the field and the management level and allows all parties - the construction manager, project manager, execution engineer, contractor, safety supervisor, construction inspector and developer - to work more efficiently and monitor the project status in terms of safety and quality in real time. "The system is adapted to any size of project and contractor, enabling monitoring, tracking and management of work resources on site, such as manpower, equipment and tools. Beti enables management of safety routines and control routines, including supervision of subcontractors. This while improving communication and work efficiency on site."

The construction industry is a traditional industry whose employees are not particularly technologically savvy.

"That's right, and that's why Beti's solution is based on the important principle of simplicity. It was clear to us that in a traditional industry where we are required to work in challenging environmental conditions, in the field, under time pressure and with a non-technological team - it is impossible to implement a complex product that requires a lot of attention. Therefore, we developed smart software with a smart, simple and easy interface. The foreman uses an easy-to-operate application, while the company manager can control it using a management interface with a simple and clear dashboard. This dashboard is a center of insights and indicates where managerial attention should be focused in the project."

So what does Beti actually provide? According to Slavin, it is a system tailored to the construction industry that provides a 360-degree solution for project management. You can find everything related to managing a construction site in it. It starts its work on the ground: an access control system is installed that works with 3D facial recognition technology and monitors the entry of workers, so that only those who are authorized to perform their work can enter. The smart gate on the site knows how many workers have arrived and allows the work to be planned accordingly. The system provides managers with control over resources: manpower and tools, work logs, meeting deadlines, quality control, tenant changes, apartment handovers, inspections. A control and monitoring panel for safety that is updated in real time, a subcontractor interface and safety tours.

"A construction manager who starts using Betty will discover that he can suddenly easily check that an element is being executed as planned and according to instructions, work with structured checklists and perform systematic inspections, which will ensure the discovery and treatment of all defects on the site, produce automatic reports at the click of a button - for example, project progress reports according to the percentage of completion of each job - and work with a digital defect management system, with the help of which no defect will be forgotten or lost," emphasizes Slavin. "All this extensive information is stored in the cloud, so there is no risk of losing information. The system accompanies the project from the moment it breaks ground until the apartments are handed over to the tenants. It provides a professional service experience for construction companies vis-à-vis apartment buyers."

The next generation: cameras that detect safety deficiencies and monitor performance

The Beti system is suitable for any size company and any size project. To date, it has been implemented in 170 companies and 650 construction sites in Israel - making the company the largest and leading company in Israel in managing systems for managing construction sites in the field. Among Beti's prominent clients are the Afkon Group, Y.H. Damari, Ken Hator, Omer Engineering, Best Construction, SGS Construction Company, Stern Engineering and Manrav. It also collaborates with the Israel Builders Association, Contec (a body for promoting innovation in the construction industry) and with the Safety Stars program of the Contractors Association. In 2019, Beti was the first company to receive approval from the Safety Director at the Ministry of Labor to function as a fully digital replacement for all legal requirements in the field of safety.

These days, the company is also setting foot abroad: the system is being implemented at the first sites in New York. At the same time, a new development will be tested at the construction site being carried out by Afcon Construction, where Intel's Mobile Eye is establishing its campus, on Mount Hachazim in Jerusalem: cameras were deployed on the site that detect safety defects in real time using artificial intelligence and image processing technologies. "Based on all the data accumulated by the company, the machine learned to identify safety defects on its own, like a site safety supervisor," explains Slavin. "Cameras based on artificial intelligence technology identify the defects and issue an alert. When the development work on this product is completed, we expect it to allow us to carry out another revolution in the field, this is the second time."
